Puppetry in Performance Workshop
Join Bread & Puppet for a workshop that leads to a participatory performance! The Upside Down World Circus features diverse puppetry and street theater performance styles to tell vital stories of the moment. Through the lens of a rehearsal process, participants in the Puppetry in Performance Workshop will be introduced to these performance styles and methods. The workshop culminates with participants performing alongside Bread & Puppet company members in a performance of Our Domestic Resurrection Circus.

About the Upside Down World Circus Show

“Is it or is it not? Am I asleep or am I awake? Am I a cockroach or am I a me? Possibilitarians! We must demonstrate humanity’s upside-down situation in the face of the government’s depraved falsehoods. Luxury silence and despair must be replaced by revolt orchestras that radically oppose the radically wrong system. It is time to unforget the revolution-in-progress and aim for the evermore on the universe’s shore.” The one and only Bread & Puppet Circus is back to confront our upside-down situation! With stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes, and a riotous brass band, The Upside Down World Circus is an urgent spectacle of protest and celebration.

FAQ and Contact

  • When and where does the show take place? Saturday, October 10th, 2026, 4:00 PM at the OKC Farmer's Public Market, 311 S. Klein Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73108
  • When will I receive my t-shirt or commemorative print? These will be available for pick-up when you check-in for the show on October 10th.
  • When is the drawing for the prize packages? Drawing will take place during opening announcements at the show on October 10th. Must be present to win.
  • Is the show ok for kids? While there is nothing inappropriate for children in our shows, we do speak on heavy topics. We generally tell parents that if they would allow their children to read a newspaper, the show will be fine for them.

  • Will there be bread and aioli? Yes, bread with optional garlic aioli. It’s vegan.

  • Can I be in the show? Participants in the workshop on Friday, October 9th will have the opportunity to participate in the show.

  • Will the show be the same as what I saw in Vermont? Or last year? Or back in the 70’s? While the structure of the show is always the same (flags, many short acts, garbage men and washer women, paper mache animals, a brass band, etc), the show is constantly evolving in response to the moment. Some of the puppets were made this year, some were made decades ago.

  • You say “No one turned away for lack of funds” but do you mean it? Yes. If you need financial assistance with a ticket, please email breadandpuppetOKC@gmail.com. Admission by donation upon arrival for kids 6 and under.

  • Where can I learn more about B&P? https://breadandpuppet.org/about-bread-and-puppet

  • I have more questions. Who can I contact? Email the OKC host committee at breadandpuppetokc@gmail.com.

About Bread & Puppet Theater

The Bread & Puppet Theater is a political puppet theater founded in 1963 by Peter & Elka Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Now based in Glover, VT, the company regularly tours the country and world with tightly composed theater pieces as well as sprawling outdoor pageants. The internationally celebrated company champions a visually rich, street-theater brand of performance art filled with music, dance, and slapstick elements. Believing that theater is a basic necessity like bread, the company frequently brings its work to the streets for those who may not otherwise go to the theater. Its shows are political and spectacular, with puppets often on stilts, wearing huge masks with expressive faces, singing, dancing, and playing music.

Bread and Puppet is recognized throughout the world and has won distinction at international theater festivals in Italy, Poland, Colombia, and Yugoslavia, beginning with their break-out performances at the 1968 Nancy Festival in France. Notable awards include the Erasmus Prize of Amsterdam, 4 Obies, the Puppeteers of America's President Award, and the Vermont Governor's Award. Bread and Puppet is constantly active, performing at its farm in Glover, VT, and in local churches, schools and parades. It regularly tours Europe, Canada, and the United States and has recently visited El Salvador, Haiti, Russia, and Korea.

Bread & Puppet continues making new work and is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the country.
