Ladles and Jellyspoons!

The one and only Bread & Puppet Circus is on their way to Oklahoma City with Anti-Empire Art that acknowledges our beloved Mother Dirt, who makes us and unmakes us, and who presents urgently needed domestic resurrection services for the victims of this latest genocide. We are joined by Palestinian cranes on their way to Washington to replace the excrement in the White House with organic bird droppings, green frogs who teach the art of hopping over seemingly insurmountable problems, and gaggles of kindergarten butterflies who frolic to their hearts’ desire. Join us for a serious and silly circus:

Our Domestic Resurrection Revolution In Progress!

Planning to attend?  Here's everything you need to know before you go:

Venue Location:
The Will Rogers Amphitheater is located in Will Rogers Park near the northwest corner of 36th and Portland. To get there, take Pat Murphy Drive off Portland (just south of 36th Street). You’ll pass the OKC Tennis Center, and the amphitheater is situated just south of the parking lot. Look for signs on the fence and the distinctive Bread and Puppet school bus at the entrance. Additional parking is available to the east of the amphitheater, but please note that parking on the grass is not allowed.

Check-In & Merchandise:
Upon arrival, please check in at the will-call table. If your sponsorship included OKC commemorative art prints or T-shirts, your items will be waiting there, clearly labeled with your name.

We also have a limited number of extra T-shirts available for purchase at $30 each. Payment options include cash, Venmo, CashApp, or donations through our SpotFund page.

Event Schedule:
Pre-show music will begin around 4:40 PM. Gates will open at 4:00 PM to give everyone plenty of time to get settled. We expect a large crowd, so we encourage you to arrive before 4:30 PM if possible. The performance will begin at 5:00, running approximately 75 minutes. Following the performance, the Bread and Puppet crew will serve their sourdough bread with aioli and facilitate the Cheap Art Sale.

Facilities & Seating:
Please note, there are no restrooms directly at the amphitheater. The nearest restrooms are inside the tennis center, and a single port-o-let is located about a 3-minute walk east of the entrance.

The amphitheater, built in the 1930s as a WPA project, features sandstone rows without handrails on the steps leading down to the stage. You’re welcome to bring blankets or cushions for comfort. If you bring chairs, we kindly ask that you sit further back to avoid blocking the view of others.

Accessibility:
Accessible parking will be available near the front entrance. Reserved seating areas for wheelchairs will be clearly marked, and seating near the front of the stage is reserved for individuals with limited hearing or vision. If you have any specific accessibility needs, please reach out to us at breadandpuppetokc@gmail.com so we can make appropriate arrangements.

What Not to Bring:

  • Glass bottles or containers

  • Tobacco products (smoking and vaping are prohibited in the park)

  • Pets, except certified service animals

  • Large coolers that take up seating space

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone. Please be considerate of older adults and those with mobility challenges. Let’s also take care of the park by properly disposing of trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the show ok for kids? While there is nothing inappropriate for children in our shows, we do speak on heavy topics. We generally tell parents that if they would allow their children to read a newspaper, the show will be fine for them.

Will there be bread and aioli? Yes, bread with optional garlic aioli. It’s vegan.

Can I be in the show? At some places we are offering a workshop before the show to work folks into the show, but otherwise, the show is not built for volunteer performers.

Will the show be the same as what I saw in Vermont? Or last year? Or back in the 70’s? While the structure of the show is always the same (flags, many short acts, paper mache animals, a brass band, etc), the show is constantly evolving in response to the moment. Some puppets were made this year, some were made decades ago.

You say “No one turned away for lack of funds” but do you mean it? Yes! If you need financial assistance with a ticket, please email breadandpuppetOKC@gmail.com

ABOUT BREAD AND PUPPET THEATER
The Bread and Puppet Theater is an internationally celebrated company that champions a visually rich,
street-theater brand of performance art filled with music, dance and slapstick. Believing that theater is a basic necessity like bread, the company frequently brings its work to the streets for those who may not otherwise go to the theater. Its shows are political and spectacular, with puppets often on stilts, wearing huge masks with expressive faces, singing, dancing and playing music.

Bread and Puppet is recognized throughout the world and has won distinction at international theater festivals in Italy, Poland, Colombia, and Yugoslavia, beginning with their break-out performances at the 1968 Nancy Festival in France. Notable awards include the Erasmus Prize of Amsterdam, 4 Obies, the Puppeteers of America's President Award, and the Vermont Governor's Award. Bread and Puppet is constantly active, performing at its farm in Glover, VT, and in local churches, schools and parades. It regularly tours Europe, Canada, and the United States and has recently visited El Salvador, Haiti, Russia, and Korea. Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side, the theater has been based in the North East Kingdom of Vermont since the early 1970s and is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the country.
